Standalone Presence Detectors used at Old Low Light

The Brief:

Old Low Light is a Grade II listed building which sits on North Shields fish quay. Part of the community for centuries, the building helped generations of mariners to safety across the turbulent waters of the Tyne. After falling into disrepair, local enthusiasts, backed by the local council and funds from the Townscape Heritage Initiative and the Coastal Community Fund (CCF), have brought the building back to life.

The three-storey building, now a heritage and community hub, is a venue available for hire and includes a café and tells the history of the quay, the river, and North Shields to visitors.

The brief was to provide a solution that would minimise energy usage and cost so Old Low Light could be run economically.

Our Insight:

“As Old Low Light is a charity run business, we needed to be extremely cost-conscious when deciding the most suitable energy saving lighting control specification for the building.

“With our extensive range of presence detection products, we designed a solution that would reduce the day-to-day energy consumption and save costs. Plus, the products we chose meant we could also reduce installation time because of the simple plug-in connection design.”

Our Solution:

“We recommended the MW3SA microwave presence detectors which are well suited for controlling lighting in corridors or large rooms. The adjustable head design of the MW3SA unit means they can be strategically positioned to create the optimal detection pattern for the area they are being used and only switch on when a presence is detected.

“We also recommended the EBDSPIR range of passive infrared (PIR) presence detectors for the smaller areas within the Grade II building, the PIR detectors provide automatic control of lighting and energy usage with an option to control manually (absence mode).”

The Result:

“The energy saving controls we recommended for use in the building helped the charity save money and dramatically cut energy wastage while providing an easy to control lighting system for staff to use.

“The simple and intuitive design of these presence detectors and the straightforward installation process helped the project manager deliver on time and within the budget of the project.”
